The Top 10 Reasons to Sing in a Chorus

There’s something magical about singing together. Whether it’s in a small community choir, a large symphonic chorus, or a casual group of friends, voices blending in harmony create connection, joy, and a sense of belonging. If you’ve ever thought about joining a chorus—or just need a little nudge—here are the top 10 reasons why you should give it a try:

1. Instant Community

When you join a chorus, you’re not just making music—you’re making friends. Choirs are filled with people who share a love for singing and connection, and rehearsals quickly become a weekly highlight.

2. Stress Relief

Singing is proven to reduce stress and boost mood. The act of controlled breathing and focusing on music helps clear your mind, while the joy of harmonizing with others can turn a rough day around.

3. Health Benefits

Believe it or not, singing is good for your body! It improves lung capacity, posture, and circulation. Studies also suggest that group singing can boost the immune system and lower blood pressure.

4. Brain Workout

Choral singing challenges your memory, concentration, and listening skills. Between learning new music, blending with others, and following a conductor, your brain gets a fun and healthy workout.

5. Confidence Boost

Standing in front of an audience and performing can feel intimidating at first, but chorus members quickly gain confidence in their voices—and themselves.

6. Creative Expression

Singing allows you to tell stories, explore emotions, and express yourself in ways words alone can’t. In a chorus, you get to share that expression on a bigger, more powerful scale.

7. Lifelong Learning

There’s always something new to discover—different musical styles, vocal techniques, and performance skills. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned singer, a chorus is a place of continuous growth.

8. Teamwork in Action

Choral singing is the ultimate team activity. No one voice dominates; it’s about blending, listening, and creating something together that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

9. Opportunities to Perform

From community concerts to big stages, singing in a chorus opens doors to exciting performance experiences. Few things compare to the rush of applause after a piece well-sung.

10. Pure Joy

At the end of the day, the best reason to sing in a chorus is simple: it feels good. Making music with others brings joy, energy, and a sense of fulfillment that lingers long after rehearsal ends.

September: A Fresh Start for the Voices Music Collective

September always feels like a new beginning. While January may mark the official start of the calendar year, for musicians and singers, September often feels like the true launch of the season. After a summer of rest, travel, and sunshine, choirs and ensembles return to rehearsal halls with fresh energy, ready to create something special together.

For the Voices Music Collective, September is the month where many of our groups begin their journey for the season ahead. It’s a time of excitement, reconnection, and possibility.

Our Golden Horseshoe Women’s Chorus and Mixed Chorus are back in session, filling Thursday mornings and afternoons with harmony, laughter, and friendship. These groups are more than just choirs—they’re communities where seniors 55+ come together to sing, learn, and share the joy of music. With their eyes on upcoming concerts and community performances, they are eager to bring their voices back to the stage this year.

Meanwhile, our elite ensemble, Voices Unlimited, also kicks into gear this month. Comprised of experienced singers who do much of their preparation at home, Voices Unlimited thrives on the artistry and discipline of its members. This group has exciting projects and performances ahead, and September is where the groundwork begins.

Why September Matters

There’s something about the rhythm of the fall season that makes it perfect for music-making. The return to routine brings focus, and the crisp air reminds us that special moments—like holiday concerts and winter performances—are just around the corner. For singers, this is the time to set new goals, embrace new challenges, and strengthen the bonds that make each choir feel like a family.

Looking Ahead

With so many of our ensembles starting fresh this month, the Voices Music Collective is buzzing with energy and anticipation. Whether you’re a longtime member or someone considering joining, September is the perfect time to get involved. Together, we’ll make this season one filled with growth, connection, and unforgettable music.

Community is just as important as the music in Voices Music Collective

At Voices Music Collective, we are passionate about singing—but we’re not just here for the harmonies. We’re here for each other. While musical excellence is something we strive for, creating a welcoming, supportive, and vibrant community is equally essential to who we are.

Singing Brings Us Together. Community Keeps Us Together.

There’s something powerful about raising your voice in song with others. It builds connection in a way few other things can. But what happens before and after rehearsal—the laughs, the conversations, the shared moments—that’s what turns a group of singers into a true collective.

In a world that can feel increasingly disconnected, Voices Music Collective offers something more: a place to belong. Whether you’re singing your heart out or just showing up after a tough day, you’re met with kindness, understanding, and a genuine sense of camaraderie.

We Show Up For the Music—and For Each Other

One of the things we hear most from members is how much they value the people in this group. It’s not unusual to find someone arriving early just to catch up with friends, or staying late to support a fellow singer through something personal. We celebrate each other’s wins—on stage and off—and offer a shoulder when someone needs it.

That sense of connection doesn’t happen by accident. It’s something we intentionally build through inclusive leadership, shared values, and meaningful moments together—on retreat, in rehearsal, or around a coffee table after practice.

A Collective, Not Just a Choir

“Collective” isn’t just a word in our name—it reflects how we operate. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and everyone belongs. We don’t just value talent—we value kindness, encouragement, and collaboration. When you walk into a Voices Music Collective event, you’re not just joining a choir. You’re becoming part of something bigger.

Music with Meaning

The music we make together is richer because of the relationships behind it. Trust shows up in our blend. Vulnerability shines through in our interpretations. Joy explodes from the stage because we feel it in the room. When we prioritize community, the music naturally follow.

If you're looking for a place to sing AND a place to belong—Voices Music Collective might be exactly what you're looking for.

Come for the music. Stay for the people.

Brewing Up Harmony: Golden Horseshoe Chorus Joins Camp Day at Tim Hortons

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh coffee, the sound of four-part harmony, and the joy of giving back to the community!

On Camp Day, a few of us from the Golden Horseshoe Chorus brought a little extra warmth to our local Tim Hortons—not just with our voices, but with our hearts. Between double-doubles and Timbits, customers were treated to live a cappella performances while they supported a fantastic cause: helping kids attend Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.

We sang, we laughed, we even got a few spontaneous sing-alongs going (turns out coffee lovers make great backup singers). It was a simple way to spread joy and raise awareness for a program that gives youth from underserved communities a chance to grow, learn, and build confidence through camp experiences.

Thanks to the staff at Tim Hortons for letting us be part of the day—and to all the generous customers who donated. It felt great to give back, one chord at a time.

Voices Unlimited Takes on Denver: A Groundbreaking Week at BHS International

What a week! Voices Unlimited just returned from the 2025 Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) International Convention in Denver, and we’re still buzzing from the energy, the music, and the memories.

As the only Canadian chorus in the contest this year—and the first mixed chorus to represent Ontario at BHS International, we were proud to carry the maple leaf high and loud. From the moment we stepped on stage, we felt the love and support from the international barbershop community. Our set was met with cheers, smiles, and standing ovations, and we couldn't be more grateful for the reception.

But the magic didn’t stop at the competition. One of the highlights of our trip was an unforgettable pop-up performance of Circle of Life alongside Music City Chorus (this year’s silver medalists!) and The Lockers from Japan. It was an incredible moment of international collaboration, unity, and pure joy—everything barbershop is about.

We came to Denver as a new voice in the international scene, and we left feeling inspired, connected, and more passionate than ever about this art form. Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey. We’re just getting started and the best is yet to come.
